I'm starting this page as a potential lead (although no connection is yet made, except through 1851 census).
In that census, it shows a pre-dominantly female household of Dumigans from Scotland (which would match family folk lore).
The record suggests that the ancestor Jane Dumigan was the grand-daughter of an Elizabeth Dummigan who died a few years later. Death record shown here.
