Very little is known about John Smith other than that he came from Ireland to Liverpool and was probably born around 1827.
He was recorded as living in 10 Newhall Street, Liverpool on 30th March 1851 (census). At that time, his profession was that of a mariner.
John Smith married Sarah Gordon (from Belfast) on 20th September 1854 in St Peter's Church, Liverpool and his address was a house in Kitchen Street.
On 7th April 1861, he was living with his family at: 25 Blundell Street, Liverpool. John (a rigger at the time) was 34 and his wife, Sarah was 27.
Their son, John William was 5 and baby Caroline Christina was 8 months old.
Their son, John William was 5 and baby Caroline Christina was 8 months old.
He is known to have had 4 chidren, namely: John William Smith (1st), Caroline Christina Smith, Charles Alfred Smith (1863) and Elizabeth Ann Gordon Smith.
A Liverpool crew list record refers to a Seaman John Smith who was aged 41 yrs, born Youghal, "S.S. Virginia" No 45170
The census of 1871 records his family living at 3 ct, 2h Kitchen Street but not him so he was probably at sea.
By 1871, his wife was listed as a widow, so John must have passed away.
The crew list record is significant as it indicates the part of Ireland that the family emigrated from. Further research could centre around Youghal in County Cork, Ireland.
