John Burgan (although spelt many different ways)
John was born in 1841 and lived in Toxteth Park with his family until he married Mary Greenwood and became the father of Elizabeth circa 1860s.
John died at sea in 1879 on a ship called the Wyberton.

1860s - John became a father - Bargen or Bergum?
We know that John became a father to Elizabeth during the 1860/70s. There are 2 potential birth certificates to purchase. See references below

In 1871, John's father William was listed as being in Toxteth Park Workhouse under the name WILLIAM BERGANE (65) (see page 2 of the big list or line 3 of the image)
John should be aged 30 and living with his daughter Elizabeth. However, this search has so far proved fruitless. The two options are listed below:
1) Marylebone Court - There is a 30 year old John Bargin who lists a man called Martin as his brother and in earlier census records Martin has not existed. Neither does he have a daughter called Elizabeth.
2) Dwerry House Street, Toxteth Park - A 25 year old John Bergan is living as a lodger with his wife - Mary Ann (38). Another lodger 25 year old Elizabeth Bergan, could be a census officer error and could be their 5 year old daughter. Alternatively a pregnant Mary Ann could have named the child (potentially born in July quarter) after this Elizabeth Bergan - is she a cousin?
Personally - I favour the second option, which would confirm that the 1871 potential birth cert. of Elizabeth Bergum is the one to buy.

John Bergen died
1879 - John Bergen (aged 36) died at sea on a ship called the Wyberton. This would fit as see 1881 census record below.

Mary Ann Birgum - John's wife
1881 - By 1881 John was dead. If Mary Ann was his wife (and the mother of Elizabeth) then the next census record lists them as livng in 7 Hyslop Street, Toxteth Park. Elizabeth is aged 15 (which would be correct for her to be 20 in 5 years time when she marries Charles Alfred) and she has a 6 year old brother called John. This would mean that her father - John Birgum died between 1875 and 1881.
